DOES ANYBODY REALLY KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS?
WEB FIND: The U.S. government does. A public service cooperatively provided by the two time agencies of United States: a Department of Commerce agency, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and its military counterpart, the U. S. Naval Observatory. You can set your computer clock online.
5-YEAR YEARNING
SPORTS: Item on a Cleveland High School basketball player seeking an exemption.

Nick Young of Reseda Cleveland, one of the top juniors in the City Section, will petition the City Section rules committee for a fifth year of athletic eligibility.

Young, a 6-foot-6 swingman averaging 20 points and 9.3 rebounds, will seek a hardship waiver based on family problems that forced him to miss school, Cleveland Coach Andre Chevalier said.

Young attended Hamilton as a freshman, then transferred to Dorsey for his sophomore season. He is in his second year at Cleveland -- his fourth year of school and athletics.

"After talking to a couple of people who have been through the process, I think he has a good chance," Chevalier said. "I'm hoping it will go through."

A SITE FOR SORE EYES
COMPUTER EYE STRAIN: An eye doctor describes an syndrome and hits upon a fool-proof way to lure web surfers. Part 1 is about symptoms, part 2 and adjustments that can be made to your monitor. Site is for a nationwide network of doctors, search here brings 4 Reseda doctors.

:: The Cleveland High School homepage links to a pdf file of the school newsletter (News of the Land February '03), addressing internet harrassment with some caveats for users.
CRIPPLED CREEK
L.A. RIVER: The Christian Science Monitor focuses on the L.A. River:

Outside the city, the graffiti-lined concrete channel has become one of the best-known symbols of Los Angeles. Cutting a 51-mile swath through dozens of communities, the ominously abandoned flood-control ditch has often played the apocalyptic backdrop in major sci-fi films. (Who can forget that full-throttle semitruck skimming cement walls in pursuit of leather-clad über-hunk Arnold Schwarzenegger on a Harley hog in "Terminator II"?)

:: A previous L.A. River story.
:: Test results of river water.
:: City's ad hoc committee on the L.A. River.
:: L.A. River Connection, report: Reshaping the Urban Landscape
:: Needlework pattern inspired by the L.A. River.
:: About those "Terminator II" film locations, Reseda's among them.

DAILY NEWS OWNER ALLEGES "CONFUSION"
Jim Romenesko’s MediaNews blog, with its unsurpassed roundup of news about media, has been warned by the Daily News' parent company MediaNews Group Inc. that the name similarity between that very fine information blog could cause actionable confusion with its string of suburban newspapers. A funny exchange of letters between lawyers ensued (pdf files): "stop it," "you're kidding," "no, we're not," "fine be that way."
From the president of the media school that handles the site:

For the record (and to appease the folks at Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP), it is not Dean Singleton whose work you read on our website. Neither Jim Romenesko nor his MediaNews has any association with MediaNews Group, Inc.
... From now on, his blog will be called Romenesko.

BETTER TO LIGHT A CANDLE
COMET WATCH: A comet only discovered last November may likely become visible to the unaided eye over the next few days above the horizon where the sun has just set. The site provides an astronomy photo a day, featuring things like this
earth photo. Site details how that photograph was made: a composite from satellite pictures.

:: Another great picture-a-day site
