HOLIDAY HEALTH, fitness clubs:
Suggesting a day-pass to a health club is a solution for guests' excessive food intake, this story offers a list of regional sites including a downtown YMCA. Reseda's Y is a local alternative. A sampling of services provided is here and it links to a cool swim lesson foto. The Y will host Aquatic Exercise Association Aquatic Fitness Instructor Certification on Saturday, March 8, 2003, by Carol Argo.

Also the country club-like Mid Valley Athletic Club will give you a free 10-day trial membership.
EDGE OF RESEDA, Sepulveda Basin Off-Leash Dog Park:
This site can come in handy after a few hours of dog watching. "Was that a beagle or an American foxhound?" The site features photos, literally thousands of links and an annoying cursor affectation.

SCHOOLS, class size:
Like a similar letter to the Times, this Daily News letter to the editor also takes school board president Young to task. Same topic, same school, different teacher.

From earlier this month and posted on the personalized weather website wunderground.com

BUSINESS INTERESTS, Big Lots!:
Pic 'N' Save changed more than its name, customers say. Resedans weigh in:
"Some of them got to be really trashy," said Evelyn Pittsenbarger, a Reseda retiree shopping for holiday decor for a charity program. "I think Big Lots! is a stupid name, but it's nicer looking. The have a nice selection and the stuff seems to be better quality."
...
"It's changed the image," said Johnny Chavaque, a Reseda maintenance man shopping for gifts at the store on Vanowen Street. "It's more organized now and they've got more employees."

WEATHER, forecast:
Sure is nice out.

A previous air quality update.
ACTIVIST, tree sitting:
While a tree-sitting protester went to cast his ballot on election day, "Reseda resident David Creech, 41, took over the perch" ... in the 400-year old oak now in the path of a road expansion project.

L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich isn't persuaded, tree must go he says; while talks continued between developer & preservationists, without him. Public Works Dept. says other options "aren't feasible."

Story from last week. Improved search function on the site follows almost daily updates.
CRIME, theft:
Some woman went all the way to Glendale's Nordstrom to exchange her freedom... allegedly. (3rd item)
KUDOS, Reseda High football:
"Barry Daniels caught a short pass and went 94 yards for a touchdown with 2:38 left to give Reseda a 26-20 Valley Mission League victory over Sepulveda Monroe. The win marks the 25th consecutive victory in a homecoming game for Reseda."

MORE SCHOOLS, test scores:
Website greatschools.net lists Reseda area public and private schools, has phone numbers and some links to standardized test scores.
SCHOOLS, equipment:
In a letter to the L.A.Times (mandatory, but free, registration) a Reseda High teacher notes irony in LAUSD School Board President Young's position, saying:
"When the school board determined this year that yet more kids must be crammed into each classroom, innovative programs such as those she claims to support were hit like any other....The 10 additional students stuffed into the computer lab make it impossible to teach our introductory digital arts course. Two dozen computers, 34 students. Do the math."

ATHLETE, former Reseda High
Feature on Nayely Jimenez, former Regent basketball player now Moorpark College, broadsided by drunken driver. Now attending the first home game. A story on players' efforts, and Moorpark College site has report, on fundraising to defray medical and rehabilitation expenses, with photo of Jimenez. See the college on its webcams.

LAPD, West Valley Station remodel:
The 2-year remodel begins. Officers move into portable trailers, a vast improvement.

Compare and contrast: Another police station (items #2 & #F-20) in the region is being built and not everyone likes how it's going.
