BUSINESS INTERESTS, Starbucks:
Anyone notice that the Starbucks new (in the former Kenny Rogers spot) to Reseda Blvd. has a drive-thru?
TRANSIT, busway:

Reseda Blvd is on a "shortlist" for a busway.
[LA County Supervisor] Yaroslavsky said his plan had always been to build three busways in the Valley -- the east-west busway that is slated to break ground in spring, and two north-south lines on either side of the Valley connecting with Metrolink stations in Chatsworth and San Fernando.

"It's not cheap," he said. "I think we need to do it right in both places. The (east-west) busway already is, quote unquote, on the cheap ... not a subway, not light rail. We owe it to the people in the San Fernando Valley that we do it right. It's going to be beautiful; it's going to be an amenity."

NEIGHBORHOOD COUCIL, certification:
A version of this city press release, moved on the wires by City News Service, was run by the Daily News on the 11th. They had no story of their own.
LOS ANGELES - Mayor Jim Hahn today announced that three additional neighborhood councils-- Encino Neighborhood Council (#49), Reseda Neighborhood Council (#50) and Bel Air-Beverly Crest Neighborhood Council-- have been certified.

"It's appropriate that the Reseda Neighborhood Council had the honor of being the historic 50th Neighborhood Council to be certified," said Mayor Hahn. "They have been a true grass-roots effort from the beginning."

Mayor Hahn also recognized the Bel Air-Beverly Crest Neighborhood Council for unifying the community. "This neighborhood council is unique in a different way," said Mayor Hahn. "They have brought together a coalition of many long-established small neighborhood groups from the hillside and canyons who were anxious to join the neighborhood council system."

General Manager of the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment Greg Nelson commended the efforts and dedication of Encino neighborhood leaders. "The Encino Neighborhood Council a shining example of a neighborhood council that has been in existence for quite a while, but was so eager to become a part of the city wide system, that they modified their structure and earned certification," said Nelson.

ART, studio tour:
a Valley Artists Studio Tour included Brian Spellman, who does architectural paintings in black, white and gray, works in his one-bedroom apartment in Reseda. story alludes to perhaps the valley's most renowned artist:
Perhaps the artist most identified with the Valley is Jeffrey Vallance. Until he moved to Las Vegas in 1995, Vallance lived, worked and exhibited in his childhood home in Canoga Park.

Vallance's oeuvre includes an ambitious piece centering on a frozen chicken he bought at a Valley supermarket and christened "Blinky, the Friendly Hen." In the mid-1980s, he did a series of drawings called "Avenue of the Absurd" that documented such West Valley landmarks as the Calabasas pet cemetery where Blinky is interred.

In an 1995 interview, Vallance complained that he could get European collectors to Canoga Park, but not Westsiders.
